The NJA Judging Philosophy

At the National Judges Association (NJA), judging is more than numbers on a score sheet:  it’s an educational process designed to support every performer’s growth. Our adjudicators are motivated by a simple philosophy: to provide positive reinforcement and constructive guidance that helps students and educators build on their strengths while discovering new ways to grow.

Every comment, ranking, and rating within the NJA system is rooted in this philosophy. Judges use rubrics that emphasize clear standards while leaving room for creativity and expression, ensuring that ensembles are evaluated fairly and consistently. More importantly, our commentary is designed to serve as building blocks – practical insights that performers and teachers can use to strengthen their artistry, teamwork, and confidence.

We believe that marching and pageantry arts are about more than competition. They are opportunities for students to learn discipline, resilience, and collaboration while sharing their creativity with their communities. The role of NJA judges is to honor that effort, celebrate achievement, and offer feedback that inspires performers to continue flourishing – on the field or stage, in the gym, and beyond.
